Chasing Lights is a collaborative multimedia artwork created during a workshop with the youngsters of Hämeenkyrö Hybrid Unit. Visual artist S.M. Khalid Imran and musician Meri Sarjanen, in partnership with Hirvitalo, the Pispala Contemporary Art Centre, and the Hämeenkyrö Hybrid Unit by Finnish Red Cross. The workshops took place between November to December 2021.

Imran’s portrait series, Chasing Lights, captures the fleeting moments of joy and release the youngsters experienced during a photography workshop. Each portrait reflects the spontaneous energy and decisions made by the youngsters. Simultaneously, Sarjanen composed an audio piece drawn from the musical experiences of the participants, blending their recordings into a single, immersive soundscape.

The final installation combines six portraits with Sarjanen’s ambient audio, creating a multi-sensory experience that celebrates expression, freedom, and unity without borders.

This multimedia artwork was created as part of Hirvitalo’s Multicultural Project 2021, funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
